Gary Neville has backed Manchester United’s transfer move for Wolves’ forward Matheus Cunha.

The Brazil international signed a new contract earlier this year but did so in the knowledge that the new deal contained a £62.5million release clause.

Cunha has been coveted by a number of Premier League clubs with Newcastle United understood to have been at the head of the queue.

The former Atletico Madrid star’s desire to play for Ruben Amorim, however, appears to have convinced the 25-year-old to join a struggling United side.

Amorim’s team have struggled for goals this season with the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund failing to convince.

And Neville believes Cunha’s adventurous style of play, allied to his versatility, are exactly what the Red Devils require.

He told Sky Sports: ‘They’re desperate in that position, he would suit the system.

What has Cunha said about leaving Wolves?

While happy to turn down offers and stay at the club in January, Cunha has been vocal about his desire to move on to pastures new in the summer.

‘I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it,’ Cunha toldthe Guardian in March.

‘Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.

‘Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.’

‘They’ve let Jadon Sancho, Antony and Marcus Rashford go, they’re playing with Garnacho at the moment but that leaves them lopsided.

‘They need someone who can beat players, someone who is equally as good at running through the middle with the ball.

‘They need to score goals, Manchester United.’

Asked to explain United’s lack of goals this season following Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford against Cunha’s Wolves side, Amorim said: ‘It’s a team thing.
